Why Accuracy is Essential in Background Checking

Background checking has been an important and helpful tool to employers in finding and hiring qualified persons for their company. Over the years the process of employment verification has played a significant role in eliminating if not lowering various company issues like workforce violence, company theft, and many others. True too, this system had helped many companies save several hundreds of dollars as retroactive effects of the said various issues. Whatever type of job, this process has its appropriate application. For driving jobs, an MVR or motor vehicle record can be requested. For child care institutions and schools where sex offender verification is mandatory, a full past check is a very good help.

But over the years changes have occurred to this process whereby credibility had been compromised. With the increase of companies conducting this procedure, many data had been recycled and people seeking jobs have been discriminated. Cases had been filed but to no avail, people have been crucially affected. What more aching to a job seeker who was deprived of work over allegations that are not true or information that is incorrect? It is somehow unjust to give job seekers discrimination as a result of erroneous background check report.

Because of the fame the term background check brought into the air, many employers have indulged into several tricks that are offered online. Articles are spreading in the internet about using social networking sites to conduct searches to employees and prospect applicants. Arguably, information that one can get from social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, and Multiply are only the tip of the ice berg or might be false. People only post pictures in their accounts that are not related in their job or may not somehow affect their jobs. And since there is no program that prohibits one from using other’s name to create email and accounts, there might be a chance that other people may post bad pictures using other’s identity. These practices simply ruin the credibility of the legitimate background check providers.

Another issue brought out by the association of background screening firms is the growing number of companies and websites who offer background check services using information from obsolete or outdated databases. It is true that the government holds millions of information from sexual offenders list, court records, educational records, etc. but it makes sure that information from databases are frequently updated especially those criminal records. The updating is mandated by a rule which exempts a person convicted of a crime however served already a maximum of eight years of sentence from being included in the list. The association argues that many sprouting companies are using the outdated information thereby critically affecting the whole business of background checking.

Why is then an accurate background check report important in the business? Well for the very reason that any record that is released can affect both the company and the applicant. On the side of the employer or the company, if the basis of their decision to decline an applicant was over fraudulent or expired information, then chances are that they lose a good employee. On the other hand, the rejected applicant was forever deprived of the chance to work and be a better citizen.

So when looking for a background check provider, always make sure that it does not just offer affordable rates on the process but also quality of each turn out.

Volunteer Firefighters to Undergo Background Checks

When the country has been attacked by the terrorist on September 11, 2001, one of the government’s arms that helped in saving people from the Twin Towers and had became victims suddenly were firemen from the different stations in New York City. They have captured the attention of the world as they courageously entered the collapsing building just to save people who trapped inside even at the cost of their own lives. Their stories were told around the world in various media and a movie was even produce to echo their bravery in that midst of national calamity.

After the grim event on the US soil firefighters across the nation have been put again into the limelight with so many pressing issues concerning them. Eight years in a row, criminal checks turned out a rather unacceptable result for a fireman thus the community has begun to question the credibility and their ability to save people in unbearable situations. Other than this, health issue surrounding the capacity of a particular fireman to perform the job has also become an important topic that needed to be met by authorities to calm down worrying community. Hence, authorities decided to intensify background check procedures on volunteer firefighters.

In Illinois, the staffs of a certain firefighter unit are mostly volunteers. Because of this situation, more than never a background check would tend to become lax as it was deem before that there are no grave situations wherein any criminal history would interfere with the conduct of the duty of the fireman. But in May this year, a fireman named Justin Weaver was arrested for federal child pornography chargers after authorities found his computer with children with him while he was still in uniform. This act should is not a right conduct of a firefighter as he is viewed by the public as a hero and life saver. The situation where Weaver was caught into brought confusion not just to adults but as well as to children. More so, his actions prove him to become a threat to the profession and to the community.

“As a fireman, the defendant placed himself in a position where children would trust and be drawn to him,” the brief of the prosecutors said in the court. “Many of the images recovered from his computer show the defendant with children in his uniform and around the fire station.”

What had put the entire block of firefighters in the situation is not actually the capability or the intent of each fireman to help but the mere fact that there are actions that should not be done by a fireman. As the issue continues to raise awareness among the people of Illinois, the challenge now is for the legislature to create a law that would advance background check and people search services among volunteers without jeopardizing the essence of volunteering. Though in Illinois, convicted felons of certain misdemeanors are mandated by law not to be accepted to the force, many still practice tolerance as numbers of people volunteering for said position is decreasing. However this issue is another case to settle by the state.
